Anne Freitag

Anne Freitag, curator of nvertebrates, departement of zoology

Anne Freitag is originally from La Chaux-de-Fonds. She studied biology at the University of Neuchâtel. Her interest in insects was sparked by Prof. Willy Matthey’s entomology courses. This passion for small six-legged creatures was able to fully develop upon her arrival at the museum in 1992, where she worked on a thesis about the ant-eating wryneck and its prey, ants.

After becoming a curator in 2001, she was able to combine her passion with her professional work: observing insects—and ants in particular—in the field during her research, and managing collections containing hundreds of thousands of specimens. Sorting, organizing, cataloging, studying: caring for the invertebrate collections is “painstaking work” that suits her perfectly.

In addition to her work with the collections and her research on ants, she regularly contributes to the creation of temporary exhibitions on a variety of themes, such as seashells (Gare aux coquilles), animal reproduction (De A à Sexes)  , sometimes unappreciated urban animals (Indésirables !?), and the importance and role of collections (Specimens 24).
