An outdoor Museum
The Lausanne's cantonal botanical garden, located in the heart of the city, is a haven of peace where nature reclaims its rights. This corner of paradise, with its seasonal rhythms, offers a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Designed by architect and urban planner Alphonse Laverrière and inaugurated on June 1, 1946, the Garden is a fine example of meticulous landscaping, with a harmonious blend of planting, rock gardens, ponds, waterfalls and paths. With almost 4,000 plant species, the site invites visitors to explore the varied world of plants: alpine, Mediterranean, medicinal, succulent, carnivorous and tropical plants all bear witness to the diversity and richness of life.
The tropical and temperate greenhouse, inaugurated in 2019, immerses visitors in both a hot, humid and temperate climate, where over 800 tropical, subtropical and equatorial species are cultivated. These plants reveal their secrets in a unique atmosphere. Here you'll discover familiar species such as ginger, pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, coffee and cocoa, as well as an impressive collection of over 400 species of orchids and our must-have carnivorous plants.
Botanical Conservatory
Housed in the building at the center of the Garden, the Botanical Conservatory hosts temporary exhibitions, a reception area, a store, herbariums, staff offices and a small greenhouse housing a collection of succulent plants.
