Aquamarine

  • Geology
  • Mineralogy

This crystal, with its impeccable geometric shape, emerges from a shapeless albite matrix that seems to have been created to make its almost supernatural perfection even more extraordinary. And yet, it is indeed a product of nature, without the slightest human intervention!

It is an aquamarine, the blue variety of the mineral called beryl.

The name aquamarine is medieval and comes from the Latin aqua marina, due to this precious stone's resemblance to the colour of the sea.

For several decades now, the Gilgit region of Pakistan in the Himalayas has become an almost inexhaustible source of some of the most beautiful aquamarine crystals known.

This specimen is 3 cm long.
