Around 46,700 vertebrates are preserved at the Naturéum. These include mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, which have been stuffed or preserved in jars of alcohol.

Today, the collections are being expanded with animals found dead or collected from zoos and care centres. Just as important as the animal itself, its origin and date of capture are valuable pieces of information, representative of historical biodiversity. The specimen provides information such as its size, wingspan, colour, etc., but also genetic information. From feathers, hair or bones, it is sometimes possible to reconstruct the relationships between individuals, thanks to museum collections.
