Black rhinoceros

  • Zoology
  • Vertebrates

The name black rhinoceros is a counterpart to white rhinoceros, but both species are actually dark grey. These misleading names come from a mistranslation from Afrikaans (a language spoken in South Africa and derived from Dutch), where wijde means wide, but was confused with white. Wide refers to the shape of the upper lip. The white rhino's lip is flat and adapted for grazing on grass, while the black rhino's lip is pointed and better suited for grasping foliage from shrubs.
