Tasks

The Naturéum operates at the intersection of heritage, culture and science to preserve, study, promote and share natural heritage and scientific knowledge with the public.

Its work spans several areas:

  • Collection conservation: the Naturéum preserves unique collections as essential elements of our identity and the advancement of knowledge, particularly for future generations.
  • Scientific research: it studies biodiversity, the mineral world and natural heritage. Research includes fieldwork, various analyses (morphological, molecular, geological) and the expansion of collections through donations, bequests or acquisitions.
  • Outreach and engagement: the institution shares its knowledge through educational activities, exhibitions and public science initiatives. It promotes access to the diversity of life, minerals and the history of the Universe for a wide range of audiences.
  • Training and partnership: the Naturéum trains the next generation of scientists, collaborates with the University of Lausanne on research and teaching, and works with other museums, scientific institutions and government departments.
  • Protection and management of collections: the collections, protected by Swiss and international laws, are managed and promoted by the institution’s team.
